Sustainable Eco-District

Low-rise districts of eco houses on solar panels heated by heat pumps — an attempt to make self-sufficient, energy-efficient housing the norm rather than a luxury.

Cutaway render of an eco house: rooftop solar array and a ground-source heat pump

The problem

A self-sufficient house is seen today as an expensive toy. But the sun and the warmth of the earth are everywhere — the only question is how to assemble them into a system that an ordinary family can afford.

How it works

The roof harvests energy with solar panels, and a heat pump draws warmth from the ground and gives it to heating and hot water. The house barely depends on the outside grid — and burns almost nothing.
